SPECIAL VISION PIECES - 1953 TO NOW

'Portal - Color Meditation #1'

Painting this piece was one of the most euphoric times I have ever had while painting. For decades I had been trying to break free and combine multiple ways of expressing images in paint. Here I included a little impressionism, a little detail work, and pure expressionistic painting.

The piece was a commission for a couple who already had a significant collection of my landscape and floral paintings. I was asked to do something different than I had done before. How lucky is that! What a blast!

The large oil on canvas is 72 inch x 60 inch and is stretched onto a frame made of round wooden hand-rail stock. I was especially jazzed when painting around the edges of the rounded frame in luscious, thickly-dabbed spectrums of shifting color.

When one is in the same space with this large piece, one can get lost in its presence. It sparks strong reactions. It seems people either don’t get it or they really love it. I hope that means it is a success if it gets people thinking.

Here are some detailed photos that feature the round edges of the painted canvas frame. - G.P.L.
